Having toured the donut shops of America, it became clear, that buying donuts was as much an event, as it was a daily ritual. American Donut shops are warm, friendly places, achingly beautiful and a reflection of the American dream. Bright colours, inviting smiles and that oh so intoxicating smell of vanilla, sugar and spice that makes the heart beat slow and the mouth water.
Just bringing our donut flavours to the UK wasn’t enough for us, and so in 2021 we set about building our own slice of vintage Americana on the south coast.
Our Albert Road store in Southsea, Portsmouth was our first branch, and remains the home and HQ of Sticky Boy Limited. We were lucky to find a shop front, with fairly good architectural bones, that perfectly lent itself to the 50’s American aesthetic synonymous with the Donut.
Attention to detail was key, and borrowing from American history we crafted something truly spectacular. Sure, we wanted to fill mouths and stomachs with our moreish donuts, but we also wanted to transport our customers to another place and time, a place where kids would ride their Schwinn or drag their Radio Flyer to a technicolour wonderland, hand over their shiny nickel and sit down to enjoy a warm fresh donut and frosted malt.
Our colour scheme, pastel tones, American architecture, and 50’s glitz, then had to be embodied in the perfect Mascot, enter Sticky Boy.
Sticky is a cheerful, adorable little donut, from a period in American history that embraced pop culture. He’s 5ft 7in tall, proudly dressed in a sticky pink raspberry flavour glaze, and adorned with soft, vanilla, rainbow sprinkles. He is the living embodiment of everything a donut should be. Filled with dreams, promise and a smooth raspberry jelly, he is the inspiration for everything we do.
We also make and sell hundreds of Sticky Boy’s every week.
Whilst our donut menu consists of more than 80 flavours, with new flavours and specials added every week, it’s not always possible to make them all in one day, but The Sticky Boy is our one true constant. No matter the day or time, there will always be a Sticky Boy in store, ready to be eaten.
